The Wireless LAN Cable Access Point OAIWM99 solution is an outdoor-hardened, strand-mountable access point solution designed to extend the reach of cable operators’ hybrid fiber coax network utilizing wireless technologies from existing rights of way. This solution from Onyx provides cable operators a fast, low-cost alternative for delivering service to businesses and consumers looking for access to the high-speed network.

Flexible service platform

The Onyx Cable Access Point OAIWM99  is flexible service platform giving cable operators the ability to offer Public Hotspot and Commercial High-Speed Data services. When in hotspot mode, the OAIWM99 enables operators to address consumer expectations for convenient access to broadband services. Alternatively, operators may choose to deploy the OAIWM99  to offer secure, wireless broadband services to businesses while eliminating the time, permitting and construction costs associated with extending aerial or buried drops.

Standards compliance and interoperability

The Onyx Cable Access Point OAIWM99 utilizes standards-compatible DOCSIS™ or EuroDOCSIS™ cable modems for network connectivity, thus ensuring interoperability with the existing cable network. In addition, the OAIWM99 offers 6- or 8-MHz channel width to meet North American or European standards. Wireless access is accomplished using industry-standard IEEE 802.11 radios approved by government regulatory agencies for use in unlicensed ISM frequencies.

Security

Security is of the highest importance when delivering wireless services. The Onyx Cable Access Point OAIWM99 augments the standards for 802.11 devices with additional security features designed to provide both the cable operator and the end-user customer maximum protection.

Solution components

> Access Point OAIWM99 Unit (APU) —Integrated cable modem and 802.11 radio card, operates in either hotspot or high-speed data mode; coax connection to HFC, power over coax.

> Corporate Services Unit (CSU) —Integrated flat-panel antenna and 802.11radio card specifically designed to provide a managed customer demark for high-speed data services driven from the Access Point OAIWM99 Unit. This customer-premises device is typically mounted on a business’ wall or roof to receive the wireless transmission, which is then converted to Ethernet and placed on the customer network.

> Antennas —Directional (flat panel), bi-directional or Omni-directional options engineered to enable the solution to achieve peak link performance in both Line of Sight (LOS) and Near LOS applications. These options are also designed to optimally leverage either hotspot or high-speed data services.
